Furikake Lantern

The Furikake Lantern is the result of a collaboration between Rio Kobayashi and Flavia Brändle. Made with a bent wooden frame concealed in Shoji paper, the design references the Japanese culinary tradition where pure rice is transformed through the addition of furikake flakes. The project came about when Kobayashi was exploring a wood-bending technique by precisely cutting it with a Japanese saw before partnering with Brändle to harness her interest in modular design. Through a process of creative exploration, the duo arrived at individual lighting modules that can be hung above a table, fixed to the wall or secured together to create a modular configuration.

After training in the craft of gilding, Flavia Brändle enrolled in the Industrial Design course at Basel School of Art and Design.
